Critique of Article Titled An American Attack on Iraq is...

An American Attack on Iraq is Not Justified was written by John E. Farley in 2002 when congress was considering a resolution to the 9-11 attacks. Farley is a professor of sociology at Southern Illinois University and still participates in war protests to this day. Farleys argument is exactly what the title states, a war in Iraq is not justifiable. The United States ultimately went to war against Iraq on March 19, 2003. Since then, the question of whether or not the war is ll, showing that he cares to inform everyone about the current situation. Although Farley does not use outside sources in his article, he seems to be a reliable source who would be knowledgeable about the subject. In the introduction to the article it is prefaced†¦show more content†¦He defines important terms subtly in foot notes without talking down to the audience as if they dont know anything. For example, Farley explains what he means by a congressional blank check in a footnote stating Congress passed a resolution in October 2002 giving authority to president George W. Bush to attack Iraq (28). He repeats this process again explaining who Al Qaeda and the Taliban are. The use of professional language shows that Farley takes the subject seriously and wants respect. By defining words and not talking down, he is showing that he wants the audience to know what he is talking about and he also respects them. Not only is the language that Farley uses serious and professional, the tone is as well. Some examples of Farleys serious tone are, ..there are great perils in terms of the consequences in the Middle East of an attack on Iraq (29) and ..it is not acceptable in a civilized world for one country to attack another.. (28). The phrases that he uses such as great perils and not acceptable in a civilized world make the audience take him seriously. The serious tone of Farleys writing helps him be more persuasive because it shows that he is serious about the subject himself. If the author isnt serious about the subject, the audience would not take him seriously either.
