The Personal Critique Is A Reflective Paper That Addresses Course

The Personal Critique Is A Reflective Paper That Addresses Course The Personal Critique Is A Reflective Paper That Addresses Course Objectives: -B.analyse The Major â€" Assignment Example > Moral legal influence in acceptable leisureGambling has been and is still considered by many to be a form of leisure. As much as this is true, there are others that have found it difficult to embrace it as a form of leisure. This could be because of what it stands for or due to other personal opinions. In my reflective study, I will discuss the facts that support the above debate. Is gambling a form of leisure? For it to be considered leisure, does it have to be morally correct? If it is morally correct, what level of legal implication does it come with? Getting answers to these questions will greatly facilitate the definition of leisure in regards to moral and legal influence involved. The lottery, horse racing, casino nights, church bingo and carnival games are different forms of gambling that people consider being leisure. Determining the morality of gambling has over the years been found to be hard to comprehend as defenses have always arise that bring about confusion on the issues that we have convictions. According to Rowe and Lynch (2012, p. 134), gambling could be defined as: the desire of another person’s property (prize) where the gambler creates a risk (losing his property) with the intention of gaining the other persons possession with nothing to give in return. As per the definition above, many have found it to be immoral to gamble and an immoral way of leisure (Oei 2010, p. 26). To justify gambling, people have come up with different explanations. Some have based their arguments on the fact that most of the things we do in life is a gamble (Zimmerman 2004, p. 17). Taking your kid to school is a gamble, planting crops to harvest in the future is a gamble and investing in the stock exchange to. Based on this argument, they consider gambling to be morally correct but there are arguments to counter this opinion. Risk is inevitable in all activities we undertake in life, but it being there is risk does not necessarily mean there is a gamble. It is how we act on the risk that makes it a gamble or not. This means if we make every risk a gamble it ends up being leisure which is very dangerous (Breen, Hing Gordon 2011, p. 727). Gambling is not to be regarded as a moral way of leisure. That is why different governments have been forced to govern the way its citizens gamble. This is because when gambling thrives, there are people who will be suffering. Jeonglyeol (2011, p. 459) explain this as one wins millions of dollars; there are millions of losers out there that invested hoping to win. That is very different from taking your kid to school. One benefiting at the cost of the others creates a problem in the society. This is because a few will get rich and the rest become poorer in the process. This stops being leisure and becomes a way of making wealth which started out without plan. According to Volberg (2002, p. 174) people gamble for the only reason which is to win. As much as they try to regard it as leisure, they do no t do it for any other reason. This requires them to sacrifices a portion of their resources and as much as they are willing there people that would want to benefit from that. This brings about exploitation of the people. Business men set up large establishment to facilitate gambling of which they are to benefit. The stakes are put so high so that they attract people and the chances of winning reduced such that it becomes almost impossible to win. This brings about exploitation which cannot be regarded as morally correct (Jeonglyeol 2011, p. 460). Research has shown that people are taking on gambling as a way of running away from the real issues of life. They tend to quench their problems, loneliness and anger with gambling. According to Eades (2003, p. 52) they hide behind it and the thought of not being able to gamble frightens them and they may do anything in order to gamble and this need for profit that does not end makes them to continue asking for more. They borrow money and take secretive loans in order to support this habit and loosing does not stop them from continuing which may lead to bankruptcy. This could not be considered to be moral and leisure. It would be wrong and misleading (Eidsmore 1994, p. 101).

Critique of Article Titled An American Attack on Iraq is...

An American Attack on Iraq is Not Justified was written by John E. Farley in 2002 when congress was considering a resolution to the 9-11 attacks. Farley is a professor of sociology at Southern Illinois University and still participates in war protests to this day. Farleys argument is exactly what the title states, a war in Iraq is not justifiable. The United States ultimately went to war against Iraq on March 19, 2003. Since then, the question of whether or not the war is ll, showing that he cares to inform everyone about the current situation. Although Farley does not use outside sources in his article, he seems to be a reliable source who would be knowledgeable about the subject. In the introduction to the article it is prefaced†¦show more content†¦He defines important terms subtly in foot notes without talking down to the audience as if they dont know anything. For example, Farley explains what he means by a congressional blank check in a footnote stating Congress passed a resolution in October 2002 giving authority to president George W. Bush to attack Iraq (28). He repeats this process again explaining who Al Qaeda and the Taliban are. The use of professional language shows that Farley takes the subject seriously and wants respect. By defining words and not talking down, he is showing that he wants the audience to know what he is talking about and he also respects them. Not only is the language that Farley uses serious and professional, the tone is as well. Some examples of Farleys serious tone are, ..there are great perils in terms of the consequences in the Middle East of an attack on Iraq (29) and ..it is not acceptable in a civilized world for one country to attack another.. (28). The phrases that he uses such as great perils and not acceptable in a civilized world make the audience take him seriously. The serious tone of Farleys writing helps him be more persuasive because it shows that he is serious about the subject himself. If the author isnt serious about the subject, the audience would not take him seriously either. Nevertheless, I fully agree with the points that John Farley makes in his article proving that going to war in Iraq was not justified.Show MoreRelatedOne Significant Change That Has Occurred in the World Between 1900 and 2005. Why the Rank Structure and Chain of Command Are Important

There are a lot of reasons for the rank structure and the chain of command. Every reason that I am going to explain in this essay is very important. I am going to separate them into two paragraphs. The first paragraph will be about the importance of the rank structure and why the rank structure is in place. The second paragraph will be about the importance of the chain of command and why the chain of command is set into place. The rank structure goes back to the 1700’s. The rank structure was put into place so that the soldiers had someone that was there to give out orders; also the rank structure was there to teach the newer enlisted respect. If the rank structure was not in place, there would be no order or discipline in the army.†¦show more content†¦But there is one simple way to fix that problem that a lot of us lower enlisted seem to have. If the person you are about to talk to is not your chief or one of the other chiefs in your platoon. Do not talk to them u nless they speak to you first. And all you really need to say to them is check, roger, hooah. In the past year and three months, I have had a lot of trouble realizing this. I tend to do the wrong thing and go talk to who I need to talk to without going about it the right way. If you want to talk to your commander, you need to talk to you chief, then your platoon sergeant, then your first sergeant, then you can talk to your commander. This may seem like a lot of work. But in all actuality if the problem that you have is able to be fixed beforehand, then it was all worth the work. Yes there are going to be situations when you know that it can only be fixed by talking to the highest person in the chain of command, but the chain of command needs to know what is going on so that they can try to help you and explain the situation to the next person up. Before I realized that the chain of command is here for the soldier, I always thought that it was just so that your chief and your platoon sergeant do not look bad to the person above them. In some cases this may be slightly true, but it is not just about that. It is about helping you out as much as possible. Help yourself by going through the chain of command. However the expanded definition of AIDS states that in addition to the above mentioned symptoms an individual is stated to be suffering from AIDS if the test for HIV antibody gives a positive result subject to one or more of the following conditions: à ¼Ã‚   Weight loss of more than 10% à ¼Ã‚   Cryptococcal meningitis à ¼Ã‚   Pulmonary or extra pulmonary tuberculosis à ¼Ã‚   Kaposi’s Sarcoma à ¼Ã‚   Neurological impairment sufficient to prevent independent daily activities. à ¼Ã‚   Candidiasis of the oesophagus and oral region accompanied by dysphagia à ¼Ã‚   Recurrent episodes of pneumonia with or without aetiological confirmation à ¼Ã‚   Invasive cervical cancer Candidiasis of the oesophagus and oral region is caused to infection by fungus in immunocompromised patients such as those suffering from AIDS and gradually no medication may be effective in future course of time ultimately leading to loss of appetite and weight. Cryptococcal meningitis is infection of the brain and is due to spread of fungus from lungs to the brain through blood circulation. People who have defects in their cell-mediated immunity such those suffering from AIDS, are susceptible to disseminated cryptococcosis. Cryptococcal meningitis is fatal. The fungus infects the nervous system causing inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. The more frequent probable causes of HIV related diseases include cerebral toxoplasmosis and cryptococcal meningitis, â€Å"cerebral toxoplasmosis most often presents as a space occupying lesion of the brain, and cryptococcosis as chronic meningitis† thus brain gets effected in particular and nervous system in general. One of the important â€Å"opportunistic infections† includes tuberculosis and may be detected at any stage in the course of immunodeficiency. Pulmonary tuberculosis is similar to non-HIV infected subjects in the initial stages of HIV infection, but the advanced stages of immunodeficiency exhibit â€Å"disseminated and multibacillary nature of tuberculosis† thus causing extensive damage to lungs in general and pulmonary system in particular. Pneumonia is an acute or chronic inflammation of lungs caused due to infection caused by a bacteria, virus or fungus. Patients suffering from AIDS easily get affected by opportunistic infections causing pneumocystis pneumonia or cytomegalovirus pneumonia. People suffering from AIDS are infected by various types of pneumonia affecting the lungs and respiratory system, thus respiratory system gets seriously affected along with the immune system. Kaposi’s Sarcoma is cancer of skin, mucous membranes and blood vessels. Kaposi’s Sarcoma is characterized by bleeding at different sites on patient’s skin with the formation of round or elliptical lesions about quarter inch to one inch in size. Informative Abstract Example Paper Ronnie Green Informative Abstract June 28, 2011 Image gap is the difference between how a person wants to look and sound compared to how they are actually viewed by others. Projecting your desired image can build trust and is critical to successful communication. Projecting an inappropriate image, however, can erode trust and cause others to doubt your abilities. Four components of your overall image are your projected first impression, your depth of knowledge, your breadth of knowledge, and your enthusiasm. Your projected first impression is the initial impact you make on another person due to your dress, voice, grooming, handshake, eye contact, and body language. First impressions tend to be long lasting and difficult to overcome. To create a positive first impression, you should have a firm but not overpowering handshake. Sit and walk in a straight yet relaxed manner. Maintain high standards of personal hygiene and grooming. Speak clearly while naturally varying your tone and volume. Finally, dress appropriately for your job responsibilities and work environment since skillful dressing can evoke positive responses to your personality. Depth of knowledge refers to how well you know your area of expertise. Demonstrating your depth of knowledge can project credibility and demand respect. You can develop depth of knowledge by studying company policies and industry standards. You can also take advantage of training programs offered by your company. Breadth of knowledge reflects your ability to communicate with others on topics outside your area of expertise. It will also allow you to increase your circle of influence with various types of people. You can increase your breadth of knowledge by reading a variety of books and magazines, watching and listening to a diverse selection of television and radio programs, and interacting with a wide array of individuals. If you encounter a person whose interests you are not familiar with, you can quickly gain knowledge and show interest by asking questions. An appropriate level of enthusiasm demonstrates your sincere interest in a subject and desire to accomplish a task. Enthusiastic people tend to work harder, longer, and more accurately than those who are not enthusiastic. Additionally, your enthusiasm, positive or negative, will spread to those around you. These elements help dictate the response you receive from others in everyday interactions. A positive response demonstrates successful interpersonal relations. It will also foster open, honest, and trusting communications.
